Personal Protective Equipment for Farmers

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is important for farmers to minimize exposure to pesticides and other hazards:

• Clothing

  Long-sleeved shirts and trousers are commonly worn, and a hat is also a common choice.
• Gloves

  Gloves are a basic PPE item, but are worn by less than half of pesticide handlers.
• Goggles or face mask

  A mask is important when spraying pesticides with fog or aerosol droplets to avoid inhaling them.
• Footwear

  Gumboots or other footwear are important.
• Apron or overalls

  An apron is a basic PPE item, but is worn by less than 10% of pesticide handlers.
• Head covering

  A head covering is an important piece of PPE.
