How To Use AFFF fire extinguishers
- With the foam extinguisher on the ground a safe distance from the fire, remove the safety pin and break the tamper seal.
- Aim the hose at the base of the fire with one hand. Don’t aim for the flames, but instead for the base moving the jet across the area of the fire to cover the flammable liquid.
- Holding the lever in your other hand, you then start to slowly squeeze this to discharge the foam. As the fire starts to die down, you can then start to move closer.
- Using the entire contents of the foam fire extinguisher, make sure the fire is fully extinguished to cool down the area to prevent it from re-igniting.
Foam Based fire extinguisher maintenance
Under BS5306-3 a British Standard to which all fire extinguishers must be maintained. The Regulatory Reform Order 2005 recommends the following maintenance guidelines be undertaken:
User – weekly
Examine the extinguisher’s safety pin or clip, as well as any pressure indicators. This will
allow you to determine if the extinguisher has been used.
Examine the external condition of the extinguisher, looking signs of corrosion, dents and any other damage that might make the extinguisher unsafe for use.
A fire safety expert should carry out the following:
BS5306 compliant basic annual service.
Five-yearly extended service.
